Loolwa Khazzoom is an Iraqi-American Jewish woman who pioneered the Jewish multicultural movement in 1990, offering lectures, classes, and workshops to Jewish educators and laypeople alike, on the history and heritage of Jews worldwide. She has written about Jewish multiculturalism for top media including The Washington Post, Rolling Stone, and Marie Claire; she has been a featured expert in documentaries including “The Forgotten Refugees,” “The Way Home,” Photo of Loolwaand “Young, Jewish, and Left;” she has presented at venues including Barnard Center for Research on Women,
the Simon Wiesenthal Center, and Harvard University; she is the editor of The Flying Camel, an anthology of women of North African and Middle Eastern Jewish heritage;
and she is the first woman known to have
led Sephardi/Mizrahi services worldwide.
Today Loolwa is the front woman for the band Iraqis in Pajamas, which combines ancient Iraqi Jewish prayers with original punk rock.
