HIMMELFARB HIGH SCHOOL
(8th-12th graders) 2025-2026

Click here for the Himmelfarb High School Schedule.

Himmelfarb High (8th through 12th grade) will meet on Sunday evenings from 6:30-8:00 p.m. We welcome back Stephen Berer, who will be lead teacher for our high school program, along with participation from Rabbi Tracy, Rabbi Werbow, and occasional guest teachers.

Stephen Berer is an educator who has focused primarily on Jewish history and literature. He is also a poet, bookbinder, illustrator, and gilder, who creates illuminated manuscripts and handmade books.

The curriculum will include the following:

Jewish ethics and values - personal, communal, and global, with discussions of classical Jewish texts, history, and current events.

Synagogue skills - Let’s take it to the next level! Students may lead parts of the Wolman Service and/or if they choose, take on a leadership role for Junior Minyan.

Social justice and action - Students will have the opportunity to serve a meal at Shepherd’s Table, learn about various Mitzvot and participate in acts of loving-kindness both at TI and in the larger community. NEW: We have received a grant from the Social Action Committee for our teens to be able to learn about and engage in Tzedakah and Philanthropy.

Youth group social activities - Approximately once a month, our high school students will be joined by other teens for social events, from on-site dinner programs to offsite adventures. Activities will be facilitated by our youth group advisor, Rachel Lande.

TZOHAR

TZOHAR offers rich and inspiring Jewish learning to area high school students. Participants will enjoy programming each week in two distinct styles: meaningful discussion grounded in the study of classical Jewish texts, and college-style classes provided by professors from the Joseph and Rebecca Meyerhoff Center for Jewish Studies at the University of Maryland.

Moot Beit Din: The Hadar Institute’s Moot Beit Din program aims “to inspire rigorous ethical debate in Jewish legal wisdom, providing students an international stage to engage the most significant moral challenges facing the Jewish community and the world.” Past participants have expressed appreciation for the opportunity to think about important contemporary issues and to share a powerful experience with other Jewish teens from around the world. Participation in the competition is optional.

  • Tzohar is a partnership between Ohr Kodesh, Ohev Sholom, Tifereth Israel Congregation, and the University of Maryland.
  • Tzohar is open to 8th-12th graders from Montgomery County and Washington, DC.
  • Programming will run from 5:30-7:45pm on Sunday evenings at Ohr Kodesh Congregation. An optional special session will be held at the Jewish Studies Library at the University of Maryland.
  • Tuition includes dinner for each Sunday evening session.
  • The 2026 Moot Beit Din Competition will be held in New York City from March 19-22. Participation is an additional fee of $450 plus the cost of transportation for the program and accommodations (scholarships are available).
