If not for the trees, human life could not exist.
Midrash Sifre (Dvarim) 20:19

TI is located just blocks from beautiful Rock Creek Park and we are keenly aware of our interdependence with nature.  Ecological practices permeate congregational life, and the very landscape of the synagogue reflects our commitment to respecting the planet. Our Green Committee leads the way on special and ongoing initiatives to help the community find tangible ways to express our love of the earth.

Some of TI's 'green' practices and projects include:

• Use of biodegradable cups, plates and utensils for congregational meals;
• Separation of all synagogue solid waste, compost and recycling;
• Gradual introduction of LED light bulbs throughout the building;
• Permeable pavement in the synagogue parking lot;
• A rain garden, filled with native plants, to retain water and protect the Rock Creek Watershed;
• A rain barrel that uses gravity to water the rain garden;
A solar array covering the synagogue roof;
A water retention garden in the front yard.

Every TI member can play a role in stewardship of our environment. Please contact the Green Committee to learn more about how you can get involved.
