SOME Shelter Casseroles

Great activity for you and the kids, even the youngest in your family.

We bake casseroles for the shelter operated by So Others Might Eat (SOME).

Baking a casserole (see suggesteed recipe below) can be pretty easy for many TI members, but we make it even easier: we give you the recipe!  If you think you can fire up your oven, even if only once during the year, then please volunteer.

Opened as a small soup kitchen in 1970, with the help of volunteers SOME now provides a nourishing, hot breakfast and lunch every day of the year.

Martha's Table Van Run

Luther Place Dinners

Cooking for a crowd is seldom as appreciated as when two TI families cook and help serve dinner to 25 women living in a shelter at the Luther Place church’s “N Street Village”. With your help just one Sunday a year this dinner becomes a way to get to know others from TI and do a Mitzvah at the same time.

For details on dates and times – Clck Here.

Arrive at  6 p.m., serve at 7 p.m. and finish by 8:30 p.m.

Shepherd Elementary School Tutoring

For at least twelve years, adults and teenagers from TI and Shepherd Park have tutored students from our local public elementary school. Each tutor is paired with a young (grade 2-6) student for the school year. The pair meet for one hour each week at the synagogue to read, practice math skills, or review homework. The weekly hour can make a tremendous difference in the academic performance of participating students by boosting their self-confidence and strengthening skills learned in school - a very high rate of return on volunteer service.

Sundays  5 - 6 p.m. Contact: Dan Nathan for details, shepherdtutoringprogram at gmail dot com

Holiday Meals

As we do every year, TI will be providing Christmas lunch meals to the residents of three Washington, D.C. Homeless Shelters on Christmas Day. This is one small way we can help some of the less fortunate citizens of Washington, D.C.

Families are welcome! In addition to the food we serve, we also give out small gifts, and our children take special
pride in helping to wrap these gift s at the locations where the meals are served.

We need people to help cook and prepare the meals (date to be announced), and we need people to help from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. on December 25.

Please notify Martin Kessel if you would like to help with this meaningful project.

Sunday, Dec. 25 • Cooking/preparation date to be announced
