Havurah - Finding Community

a community within community

Havurah celebrating on Sukkot

Havurah (cha-v-rah)
n. plural - havurot (cha-vu-roht)

def: A small group of TI members (individuals or families) who get together to learn, play, grow and laugh together

TI's first Havurah grew out of a group of families with toddlers who were looking for a more intimate group within the congregation to share the joy of parenting and raising their children Jewishly.  Over the years, this group has come together to celebrate Jewish holidays, enjoy a variety of outings and activities (both secular and religious), share lifecycle events, and when necessary, provide comfort and support during times of sadness, illness and loss.

This Havurah was so successful that TI began forming other Havurot for members. Havurot have been formed around families with similar-aged children, or people with common interests, or life cycle stages such as empty-nesters.  (Photo: Members of Havurah M’Kor enjoy a sukkah build and potluck.)

How Are Havurot Formed?

Havurot are formed based on age, interests, life cycle stages, or other specific points of commonality.  The Havurot provide a wonderful way for members to further develop TI's strong sense of community with a smaller group of peers.

New Havurot are formed as members express interest in joining, and a like-minded group can be identified.
