TI'ers get toghether for an annual retreat to disucuss and investigate special topics. The retreat is held either close by at the Pearstone Retreat Center in the Baltimore suburbs, or in-town at the synagogue.
The theme of last year's retreat was "Creating a Caring Community." We focused our discussions on what Judaism teaches us about the responsibilities members of a community have to each other.
The Fall 2010 Retreat theme was Mussar. Rabbi Bob Saks, 2010's program chairperson, explained that Mussar is a Jewish ethical, educational and cultural movement that developed in 19th century Eastern Europe.
At the conclusion of the 2010 retreat, participants proposed two values that TI will concentrate on, "To Rise Before the Elderly" and "Friendly Greeings." TI will infuse these values into as many aspects of congregational life as possible within the coming year. For more information about these values, as well as Mussar - see the January 2011 Menorah Newsletter article by Sue Catler and Joel Cohen.
